Meet the Artist
Have you ever tried to explain something that words alone can't adequately describe what you see or feel? Or maybe what you're trying to communicate is just not landing right and you begin to grasp for ways to understand and be understood. To Green, this is precisely the reason he turned to art.
“Art is a language that is always evolving and changing. It speaks through color, shapes and patterns and has the power to heal, inspire, motivate and provoke change. When I was a kid, I was very shy and awkward. My Father would sit and draw with me and my brother Pat at the kitchen table all night long and we just loved making pictures. I would spend my Sunday afternoons studying the Funny Pages and copying the characters. I hated reading, but when I had to I always chose books that had lots of illustrations. To me, pictures were like poems, they moved me, and it became my preferred way of communicating.”
By the time Green was in High School in the mid 1980’s his brother Pat had become a skilled artist and began to immerse himself into the Graffiti Scene. Naturally Green was influenced by this new art style and was taken under his big brother’s wing. It was at that point that Green knew he had to pursue art as a career. “I was in the ninth grade making money doing Graffiti Jean Jackets and Shirts and we were like celebrities because of the murals we were doing in the neighborhood.”
Green later went on to graduate from The Art Institute of Philadelphia in 1989 earning a degree in Advertising and Graphic Design and launched out as a freelance Graphic Designer and Illustrator. After many ups and downs in the field Green was growing weary and began to question whether a career in art was viable. “I was living with my girlfriend Camille and our daughter Merissa at the time, we were just working to pay bills and wanted something more.” Unbeknowest to him Green’s prayers were answered and his life would never be the same.
“I met Bishop Pernell of Bet HaSHEM YHWH World Wide Ministries over the phone. He called me to pray for me, and that one prayer changed my life. At the time he was beginning to build a church, and I was in the infancy of my career as an artist, but we came together and we began to build and grow a life changing ministry. I was ordained a Pastor and it was the beginning of me embracing my art for a higher purpose.
From The mid 1990’s to present day Green has had his share of challenges. "The greatest hardships I had to overcome was being a widower and surviving cancer. What I hope to teach through my ministry and art is that you can suffer loss and fail, start over again and have a good outcome." It is Green’s goal to tell compelling stories from his personal and observed experiences through his work. He seeks to create images that uplift and feed the soul and holds firm to the belief that the same way art changed his life, it can change yours too.
